Discover the Majestic Aposelemis Dam: Crete's Water Supply Marvel

Nestled between the quaint villages of Potamies and Avdou in Crete lies the magnificent Aposelemis Dam, a testament to engineering ingenuity and a lifeline for the region.

Completed in 2012, this monumental project was conceived to address the critical needs for water supply and irrigation across the northern part of eastern Crete, spanning from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, Lasithi.

Harnessing the abundant waters of the Lasithi Mountains, the dam boasts a staggering capacity exceeding 30,000,000 cubic meters, making it the largest technical lake on the island. But its significance extends far beyond its utilitarian function; today, it serves as a thriving ecosystem, providing sanctuary to various species of birds and transforming the surrounding area into a vibrant wetland habitat. For visitors, the Aposelemis Dam offers a captivating retreat into nature's embrace. Wander through picturesque trails, enveloped by the serene beauty of the sunken Sfentyli village, whose remnants emerge and recede with the fluctuating water levels. This phenomenon has become a draw for many, offering a glimpse into the village's storied past dating back to the 16th century.

Once home to a bustling community, Sfentyli now lies submerged beneath the tranquil waters of the dam. However, its legacy endures, with recent archaeological discoveries shedding light on its rich history. Renowned archaeologist Athanasia Kanda unearthed 65 ancient skeletons near the site, believed to be remnants of a Minoan cemetery, further adding to the allure of this remarkable locale. As the heart of the region, Aposelemis Dam not only sustains life but also serves as a beacon of resilience and adaptation.

Its waters quench the thirst of surrounding villages and nourish the land, fostering growth and prosperity. Yet, amid its practical significance, the dam remains a testament to the delicate balance between human intervention and the enduring power of nature. So come, immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Aposelemis Dam, where history, nature, and innovation converge in perfect harmony.
