Exploring the Hidden Gem: Kera Village

Nestled 50 kilometers southeast of Heraklion and 25 kilometers from the charming village of Chersonissos, Kera is a traditional haven tucked away in the heart of the Chersonissos Municipality.

Perched at an altitude of 680 meters, it stands as the last mountainous outpost of the region, offering a rugged yet captivating ambiance brimming with noteworthy attractions.

Traversing the provincial road from Heraklion to Lasithi Plateau, one is greeted by Kera's untamed beauty, cradled by abundant spring waters and lush valleys, notably the creek of the Virgin Mary. Once known for its milling trade, the village has gracefully transitioned to olive cultivation, renowned for producing exquisite quality olive oil.

Comprising two charming settlements, Kato Kera and Apano Kera, the village derives its name from the historic Panagia Kera or Kardiotissa Monastery, nestled to the north. Dating back to the 9th century, this monastery stands as a testament to the village's rich history, adorned with remarkable frescoes and serving as a place of worship and a hub for revolutionaries against various conquerors.

Exploring the environs, remnants of pre-Hellenic cities and traces of a Late Minoan sanctuary have been unearthed atop Karfi Hill and Papoura Hill, attesting to Kera's ancient heritage. Known in historical records as "Minitis" and "Mesomouri" during different epochs, the village's strategic location facilitated early warnings against potential invaders.

Beyond the confines of the settlements lie natural wonders like Apotiposi, a towering rock formation reminiscent of the Virgin Mary, overlooking the enchanting church of Zoodochos Pigi. Nearby, the Empasa Gorge and its cascading waterfall, a tributary of the Ambelos Gorge, beckon adventurers, with a scenic hiking trail linking Kera to Gonies village.

As the sun sets, Kera's quaint cafes beckon visitors to unwind amidst picturesque vistas, offering a taste of authentic local cuisine, complemented by fine wine and tsikoudia. Whether seeking tranquility or adventure, Kera promises an unforgettable retreat, where hospitality meets unparalleled natural splendor.
